I've been loathe to say it, because I believe a D is a D is a D.
But this is finally making me say it: Joe Lieberman's got too much Republican in him.
Doing little to dispel charges that he's a closet Republican, Lieberman told nationally syndicated radio host Don Imus that, if elected president, he'd appoint Republican upstart Sen. John McCain as his secretary of defense. [. . .]
"If I were president--I'm going to get him into trouble now--but, I'd ask John McCain to be my secretary of defense," said Lieberman. "I have total trust in him. He's strong, he's independent and he's a hero."
Lieberman's spokesman Jano Cabrera--after initially insisting it was a joke--conceded his boss was somewhat serious.
I know Meteor Blades laid out the case for Lieberman's being a Democrat--and I mostly agree with it--but let's remember this: John McCain is a Republican. Period. And not even a very liberal one. He's heading up the Bush re-(s)election effort in Arizona.
Sure, Clinton had Cohen, a Republican, in the Defense chair. Look at where it got us, though: Cohen fired Wesley Clark. And now is not the time to make moves like that. We need to be unified as Democrats. Joe Lieberman just lost me for good.
