I was just reading Josh over at TPM and he's got this:
Clearly, the Kerry campaign should highlight the inaccuracy of the charge. But I think they should be focusing their fire on the shamelessness, the disrespect for the intelligence of the public and the press.
They simply can't stop lying.
That point should be hit again and again and again. And not simply -- or even primarily -- on the narrow point of dishonesty but on the broader issue of disrespect for the people they're communicating with.
'Disrespect' doesn't quite convey the intended message. But it comes close. It may be closer to 'contempt' though I think the attitude is somehow breezier than that. They don't think any rules apply to them.
They want to say up is down. And they're sure they can get away with it because they think the people who are listening are either chumps or that their trust can be exploited endlessly.
Did he just notice this? Is he joking?
I was never that much of a political animal unil the 2000 elections. I've got other interests and other things to do. But in watching that election I was astonished at how casually these guys just flat out lied. Like he says, they think the people who are listening are either chumps or that their trust can be exploited endlessly.
When I was little and in grade school during the cold war (Sputnik went up then) one of the reeeely, reeeely bad things about them nasty commies was that they lied to their populations. Evil lies, PROPAGANDA, evil, evil, evil.
This is what we were taught and it stuck with me. Imagine my astonishment when in my fifties our government to be was doing exactly what we were taught was so EVIL. Using dishonest propaganda.
If there's one thing Kerry should pound on relentlessly it's this. Never, ever, stop. Shout it from the roof tops every day.
Your current government thinks you're suckers and they lie to you on a daily basis because they think you're too stupid to see notice.
